Slide here. So", "start": 247.48, "stop": 254.48, "id": 56}, {"text": " I really love this analogy of libraries and laboratories. You know, both of those", "start": 254.48, "stop": 259.92, "id": 57}, {"text": " institutional structures have things in common. They both have processes and", "start": 259.92, "stop": 264.44, "id": 58}, {"text": " procedures that are there for a reason. Libraries, you know, take the long view", "start": 264.44, "stop": 268.5, "id": 59}, {"text": " with things. They need to be selective in what they choose to archive and how", "start": 268.5, "stop": 272.76, "id": 60}, {"text": " they need to think about storage, not only for today, but also for tomorrow. And", "start": 272.76, "stop": 277.28, "id": 61}, {"text": " there are policies and procedures in place to keep this happening and keep it", "start": 277.28, "stop": 281.94, "id": 62}, {"text": " safe. You know, similarly with laboratories, you can't just let anyone walk in", "start": 281.94, "stop": 286.92, "id": 63}, {"text": " from the street into a laboratory. You know, there's occupational safety and", "start": 286.92, "stop": 290.8, "id": 64}, {"text": " hazards and regulations and things to make sure that the research that is done is", "start": 290.8, "stop": 295.92, "id": 65}, {"text": " done the right way, that it supports reproducible research, that the findings", "start": 295.92, "stop": 301.24, "id": 66}, {"text": " are sound and solid.", "start": 301.24, "stop": 302.98, "id": 67}, {"text": " But then there's back alleys. And that's where I've been finding myself for the", "start": 304.56, "stop": 308.76, "id": 68}, {"text": " last two weeks with my studio co-coordinators, Anna", "start": 308.76, "stop": 312.2, "id": 69}, {"text": " Kias and Sebastian Maestrovich.", "start": 312.2, "stop": 313.82, "id": 70}, {"text": " The production that we've put together reminds me of some of the images", "start": 314.78, "stop": 321.66, "id": 71}, {"text": " that we've seen coming out of Ukraine with regular people who, you know, have", "start": 321.66, "stop": 326.22, "id": 72}, {"text": " ordinary jobs, their teachers, their doctors, their students. And, you know,", "start": 326.22, "stop": 331.42, "id": 73}, {"text": " whole communities are chipping in to provide resources, you know, to build", "start": 331.58, "stop": 337.3, "id": 74}, {"text": " supplies to support the war effort. It feels a little bit like a community", "start": 337.3, "stop": 343.4, "id": 75}, {"text": " Molotov cocktail factory in a back alley with everyone chipping in however they", "start": 343.4, "stop": 348.96, "id": 76}, {"text": " can. So for the last two weeks, the group only started March 1st. In the course", "start": 348.96, "stop": 355.46, "id": 77}, {"text": " of two weeks, we now have over 1200 volunteers. We've captured over 2300", "start": 355.46, "stop": 361.16, "id": 78}, {"text": " websites. We've uploaded more than 14,000 documents and and related materials", "start": 361.16, "stop": 367.3, "id": 79}, {"text": " that we've gotten from those websites to the Internet Archive. And we're also", "start": 367.3, "stop": 372.32, "id": 80}, {"text": " working with the Web Recorder software for people to create their own high", "start": 372.32, "stop": 376.98, "id": 81}, {"text": " fidelity Web Archives on their own computers. And not only computers, we also", "start": 376.98, "stop": 381.12, "id": 82}, {"text": " have enlisted Raspberry Pis into the operations.", "start": 381.12, "stop": 383.5, "id": 83}, {"text": " We've been working with so many different people in devices and hardware. People", "start": 385.06, "stop": 388.74, "id": 84}, {"text": " are running things on their own servers. All of us are trying to capture things", "start": 388.74, "stop": 392.76, "id": 85}, {"text": " as quickly as possible.", "start": 392.76, "stop": 394.46, "id": 86}, {"text": " And this is necessary in a state of emergency. We are not associated formally", "start": 395.68, "stop": 401.24, "id": 87}, {"text": " with any institution, with any sort of infrastructure. We're being supported by", "start": 401.24, "stop": 406.66, "id": 88}, {"text": " folks from the Internet Archive.", "start": 406.66, "stop": 408.18, "id": 89}, {"text": " We're being supported by the institutions that we work for. But to be able to act", "start": 408.2, "stop": 413.28, "id": 90}, {"text": " in the capacity of volunteers who can work quickly and outside of the kind of", "start": 413.28, "stop": 417.42, "id": 91}, {"text": " more formal and thoroughly thought through university structures, because there", "start": 417.42, "stop": 421.66, "id": 92}, {"text": " simply isn't time to go through all of the hoops and procedures and committee", "start": 421.66, "stop": 426.86, "id": 93}, {"text": " meetings necessary to do this sort of in a university context.", "start": 426.86, "stop": 430.06, "id": 94}, {"text": " So I think the question I have for the community is whether library laboratories", "start": 432.0, "stop": 436.78, "id": 95}, {"text": " within a university and institutional context can reduce the need for Molotov", "start": 436.78, "stop": 441.2, "id": 96}, {"text": " cocktails moving forward. You know, it's it's a amazing effort with our whole", "start": 441.2, "stop": 446.18, "id": 97}, {"text": " volunteer community. But can we put some safeguards in place moving forward for", "start": 446.18, "stop": 450.8, "id": 98}, {"text": " capturing digital cultural heritage on an ongoing basis before it's an emergency", "start": 450.8, "stop": 454.84, "id": 99}, {"text": " so that we don't need to have as many Molotov cocktails to make this work? And", "start": 454.84, "stop": 461.4, "id": 100}, {"text": " furthermore, how can library laboratories offer meaningful guidance and", "start": 461.4, "stop": 465.18, "id": 101}, {"text": " support for emergency efforts?", "start": 465.18, "stop": 466.9, "id": 102}, {"text": " How can universities and folks who've been working with web archives, you know,", "start": 467.28, "stop": 471.32, "id": 103}, {"text": " share the things that they've learned with people who are coming into this space", "start": 471.54, "stop": 476.12, "id": 104}, {"text": " in the spirit of banding together in an emergency to get things done to help keep", "start": 476.12, "stop": 481.74, "id": 105}, {"text": " us clear out of dead ends and to, you know, point us towards, you know, tools and", "start": 481.74, "stop": 486.86, "id": 106}, {"text": " methods and approaches and techniques that can help our work go faster.", "start": 486.86, "stop": 492.4, "id": 107}, {"text": " This is not a project that any of us want to do. This is not a project that we", "start": 493.26, "stop": 497.48, "id": 108}, {"text": " hope will ever be used. We would like nothing more than for none of these web", "start": 497.48, "stop": 501.64, "id": 109}, {"text": " archives to be necessary in the end, for all the servers to remain up and", "start": 501.64, "stop": 505.46, "id": 110}, {"text": " uncompromised, and for the people maintaining them to be safe. But in case that", "start": 505.46, "stop": 511.82, "id": 111}, {"text": " doesn't happen, we're all glad to be here and to be contributing to making sure", "start": 511.82, "stop": 517.92, "id": 112}, {"text": " that some form of this crucial digital cultural heritage is captured accurately", "start": 517.92, "stop": 523.98, "id": 113}, {"text": " moving forward. So if you're open to this, what's the biggest challenge that you're facing", "start": 535.78, "stop": 540.3, "id": 116}, {"text": " that you faced here in these first two weeks? It's time. I mean, time on multiple", "start": 540.3, "stop": 547.1, "id": 117}, {"text": " angles. On one hand, you know, we've seen sites go down", "start": 547.1, "stop": 551.5, "id": 118}, {"text": " shortly after we finish archiving them.", "start": 551.5, "stop": 553.18, "id": 119}, {"text": " There are sites that we've missed. So that's, you know, it is a race against", "start": 553.3, "stop": 558.32, "id": 120}, {"text": " time. We have folks monitoring the situation on the ground and we update things,", "start": 558.32, "stop": 563.46, "id": 121}, {"text": " you know, based on where we see that there are, you know, active fighting, active", "start": 563.68, "stop": 567.68, "id": 122}, {"text": " bombing, and where servers might be compromised.", "start": 567.68, "stop": 570.94, "id": 123}, {"text": " And there's also time on the other side of, you know, it takes time to onboard", "start": 571.8599999999999, "stop": 576.56, "id": 124}, {"text": " volunteers. You can't just throw tutorials at people and be like, have fun.", "start": 576.56, "stop": 581.22, "id": 125}, {"text": " Sometimes that works, but often it doesn't. And so, Dina Strong and other", "start": 582.02, "stop": 586.92, "id": 126}, {"text": " volunteers in our community have been putting an incredible amount of effort to", "start": 586.92, "stop": 590.64, "id": 127}, {"text": " answering questions, pointing people to the right places to start, running live", "start": 590.64, "stop": 594.86, "id": 128}, {"text": " sessions. Kim Martin has been amazing organizing, a very well organized, as you", "start": 594.86, "stop": 600.78, "id": 129}, {"text": " would imagine, metadata team to enhance the materials that have been uploaded to", "start": 600.78, "stop": 605.18, "id": 130}, {"text": " the Internet Archive. So it's the pressures of time on both ends. Great. Another", "start": 605.18, "stop": 610.82, "id": 131}, {"text": " question here. Are you archiving social networks content like Telegram or others?", "start": 610.82, "stop": 615.4, "id": 132}, {"text": " There are other initiatives that are working on web archiving more broadly. We are very specifically focusing on cultural", "start": 620.84, "stop": 624.64, "id": 134}, {"text": " heritage institutions. So libraries, archives, museums, you know, ballets, you", "start": 624.64, "stop": 630.58, "id": 135}, {"text": " know, things that represent kind of Ukrainian culture and cultural heritage that", "start": 630.58, "stop": 635.36, "id": 136}, {"text": " people have invested the time and effort to put online and share with the world.", "start": 635.36, "stop": 639.28, "id": 137}, {"text": " We have time for one more question here.", "start": 640.18, "stop": 642.06, "id": 138}, {"text": " And this one, you kind of touched on it a little bit, but how has this new", "start": 642.06, "stop": 647.16, "id": 139}, {"text": " priority project affected your regular day-to-day work? And so our work", "start": 1014.88, "stop": 1019.46, "id": 231}, {"text": " continues into a second phase.", "start": 1019.46, "stop": 1021.36, "id": 232}, {"text": " And in 2020, this led to a partnership with the Internet Archive and", "start": 1021.94, "stop": 1026.82, "id": 233}, {"text": " our Archivit collaborators.", "start": 1026.82, "stop": 1028.56, "id": 234}, {"text": " And here we have two priorities. So the first is to develop an analysis platform,", "start": 1029.5, "stop": 1035.14, "id": 235}, {"text": " which essentially reimagines the Archives Unleashed tools and sees them", "start": 1035.44, "stop": 1039.6, "id": 236}, {"text": " integrated within the Archivit environment. And our goal here is to provide this", "start": 1039.6, "stop": 1044.68, "id": 237}, {"text": " end to end process for collecting and studying Web Archives. And here we have", "start": 1044.68, "stop": 1049.3, "id": 238}, {"text": " Arch. The second priority draws upon and expands our foundations of community", "start": 1049.3, "stop": 1055.84, "id": 239}, {"text": " building. And so our aim here is to focus on opportunities that engage with Web", "start": 1055.84, "stop": 1061.22, "id": 240}, {"text": " Archives research, but in a more intensive way than our data thorns allowed for.", "start": 1061.22, "stop": 1066.98, "id": 241}, {"text": " And so these two priorities are very much intertwined. So Arch, simply put, is a platform", "start": 1090.82, "stop": 1097.7, "id": 246}, {"text": " for interacting with and conducting analysis on Web Archive collections. And as", "start": 1097.7, "stop": 1103.98, "id": 247}, {"text": " part of our integration work, Arch presents this similar look and feel to other", "start": 1103.98, "stop": 1108.58, "id": 248}, {"text": " Archivit research services that partners would be very familiar with. The", "start": 1108.58, "stop": 1113.34, "id": 249}, {"text": " platform provides an entry point for conducting in-depth analysis.", "start": 1113.34, "stop": 1117.66, "id": 250}, {"text": " And we see it as a way for unlocking research potential", "start": 1118.22, "stop": 1120.92, "id": 251}, {"text": " of these Web Archive collections.", "start": 1120.92, "stop": 1122.52, "id": 252}, {"text": " And so here you'll see a little bit of a tour. It provides the ability to", "start": 1123.16, "stop": 1128.42, "id": 253}, {"text": " generate over a dozen data sets that researchers can then take and do more in", "start": 1128.42, "stop": 1134.24, "id": 254}, {"text": "-depth analysis on. And it also presents some simple in-browser visualizations for", "start": 1134.24, "stop": 1139.44, "id": 255}, {"text": " researchers just to get that initial deep dive into it and start to see what's in", "start": 1139.44, "stop": 1145.16, "id": 256}, {"text": " the Web Archive collection and some of the questions they can start to ask of it.", "start": 1145.16, "stop": 1148.76, "id": 257}, {"text": " And so in terms of the data sets that are offered, we've categorized them into", "start": 1151.06, "stop": 1156.14, "id": 258}, {"text": " these four working themes. The collection data sets provide this basic overview", "start": 1156.14, "stop": 1161.44, "id": 259}, {"text": " of a collection. And I think a lot of our cohort groups have used that as an", "start": 1161.44, "stop": 1166.58, "id": 260}, {"text": " entry point. Network data sets can be used to explore the ways that websites link", "start": 1166.58, "stop": 1172.8, "id": 261}, {"text": " to each other. And then users can also explore text components of a Web Archive.", "start": 1172.8, "stop": 1177.32, "id": 262}, {"text": " So this would include plain text of a Web page, text file information, as well as", "start": 1177.76, "stop": 1183.16, "id": 263}, {"text": " named entities. And then finally, the file formats provides an opportunity to", "start": 1183.16, "stop": 1188.16, "id": 264}, {"text": " explore information on the binary files within a Web Archive.", "start": 1188.16, "stop": 1192.86, "id": 265}, {"text": " And so now we turn to the cohort program. And so in understanding the logistics", "start": 1194.98, "stop": 1200.36, "id": 266}, {"text": " that are involved, we again return to this question of what can you do with Web", "start": 1200.36, "stop": 1204.88, "id": 267}, {"text": " Archives? So our goal in launching this program is to foster and support research", "start": 1204.88, "stop": 1210.12, "id": 268}, {"text": " engagement with Web Archives as scholarly objects. And so our cohort research", "start": 1210.12, "stop": 1215.68, "id": 269}, {"text": " teams have engaged in this year-long intensive collaboration, or almost a year as", "start": 1215.68, "stop": 1222.14, "id": 270}, {"text": " of now, to conduct investigations that use Web Archival data. We've built", "start": 1222.14, "stop": 1228.72, "id": 271}, {"text": " supports into the program that include things like mentorship from the Archives", "start": 1228.72, "stop": 1233.2, "id": 272}, {"text": " and Leash team. So this comes from leadership from Ian Milligan and we've also", "start": 1233.2, "stop": 1239.21, "id": 273}, {"text": " connected teams with individuals who have specialized knowledge and expertise", "start": 1239.21, "stop": 1243.69, "id": 274}, {"text": " that have been very helpful in addressing some of the", "start": 1243.69, "stop": 1247.13, "id": 275}, {"text": " roadblocks that we've encountered.", "start": 1247.13, "stop": 1248.69, "id": 276}, {"text": " So this includes contributions from Jimmy Lynn and one of our lead developers on", "start": 1249.65, "stop": 1254.35, "id": 277}, {"text": " art, Helga Holtzman. And we've also provided opportunities for peer-to-peer", "start": 1254.35, "stop": 1259.17, "id": 278}, {"text": " support for groups to be able to share some of their best practices and their", "start": 1259.17, "stop": 1264.57, "id": 279}, {"text": " resources and experiences as they've gone through the program.", "start": 1264.57, "stop": 1268.01, "id": 280}, {"text": " To tie us back into ARCH, our cohort groups are essentially the first", "start": 1269.5700000000002, "stop": 1275.49, "id": 281}, {"text": " users to pilot ARCH.", "start": 1275.49, "stop": 1277.09, "id": 282}, {"text": " And it's been a very rewarding experience both for the researchers because they", "start": 1277.47, "stop": 1281.25, "id": 283}, {"text": " are able to fairly easily and quickly generate these data sets for analysis, but", "start": 1281.25, "stop": 1287.51, "id": 284}, {"text": " also for our team as we've been able to iteratively develop a platform that", "start": 1287.51, "stop": 1293.11, "id": 285}, {"text": " continually assesses the needs of users.", "start": 1293.11, "stop": 1295.31, "id": 286}, {"text": " And I would also just like to finally point out here that an additional benefit", "start": 1296.43, "stop": 1300.55, "id": 287}, {"text": " of this program has been to help increase the use, the access, and the visibility", "start": 1300.55, "stop": 1306.25, "id": 288}, {"text": " of the curated collections by ARCH event partners. And our project, we were investigating and", "start": 1513.09, "stop": 1519.39, "id": 328}, {"text": " focusing on crisis communication and how it was conducted in the Niagara region", "start": 1519.39, "stop": 1525.85, "id": 329}, {"text": " during the course of the pandemic.", "start": 1525.85, "stop": 1528.03, "id": 330}, {"text": " So I'm going to first describe the data set, how we prepared it, and then get", "start": 1528.83, "stop": 1533.47, "id": 331}, {"text": " into our research question and the few different venues that we've been exploring", "start": 1533.47, "stop": 1537.51, "id": 332}, {"text": " this idea with. So starting in early pandemic days, the archives", "start": 1551.07, "stop": 1557.57, "id": 335}, {"text": " at Brock University created a seed list and some scrapes of certain", "start": 1557.57, "stop": 1564.41, "id": 336}, {"text": " datasets or certain websites, pardon me, having to do with institutions in the", "start": 1564.41, "stop": 1570.37, "id": 337}, {"text": " Niagara region that dealt with COVID and the pandemic. So you can think of", "start": 1570.37, "stop": 1577.25, "id": 338}, {"text": " municipal governments, community organizations, and another thing we found", "start": 1577.25, "stop": 1581.81, "id": 339}, {"text": " particularly interesting was different wineries and other locations in the", "start": 1581.81, "stop": 1587.49, "id": 340}, {"text": " Niagara region that were forced to sort of change production from spirits to", "start": 1587.49, "stop": 1592.53, "id": 341}, {"text": " alcohol for cleansing and stuff like that. So all of this chronology and all of", "start": 1592.53, "stop": 1598.49, "id": 342}, {"text": " these incidences or all of these things, pardon me, are kept track of in this", "start": 1598.49, "stop": 1603.63, "id": 343}, {"text": " archive. So approximately 56 different organizations and we're actually, I think", "start": 1603.63, "stop": 1609.43, "id": 344}, {"text": " it's closer to 400 gigabytes of data. So it's not huge, but it's certainly not", "start": 1609.43, "stop": 1613.29, "id": 345}, {"text": " something you want to sort through on your own directly. So much like Sam has", "start": 1613.29, "stop": 1619.99, "id": 346}, {"text": " described, we're using Arc to extract the full text. That's what we were the most", "start": 1619.99, "stop": 1625.87, "id": 347}, {"text": " interested in of all of these websites and then prepare them in a way that we can", "start": 1625.87, "stop": 1630.29, "id": 348}, {"text": " perform some analysis on them.", "start": 1630.29, "stop": 1632.77, "id": 349}, {"text": " So we ended up or the direction we went in is sort of twofold. We created a solar", "start": 1634.85, "stop": 1639.85, "id": 350}, {"text": " work light search interface that sits on top of the whole archive so that the", "start": 1639.85, "stop": 1646.23, "id": 351}, {"text": " researcher was performing, the research can do some distant reading and look for", "start": 1646.23, "stop": 1650.71, "id": 352}, {"text": " trends using the whole contents of the archive.", "start": 1650.71, "stop": 1654.69, "id": 353}, {"text": " But then the other thing we've been spending a lot of time on is analyzing and", "start": 1654.69, "stop": 1660.07, "id": 354}, {"text": " creating further derivatives of the full text that we got from Arc into different", "start": 1660.07, "stop": 1664.23, "id": 355}, {"text": " environments such as Google Colab.", "start": 1664.23, "stop": 1666.25, "id": 356}, {"text": " So once we were able to sort of take a look at this large archive, pull out some", "start": 1667.99, "stop": 1672.69, "id": 357}, {"text": " information out of it, we could then polish it up and put it into a Jupyter", "start": 1672.69, "stop": 1676.65, "id": 358}, {"text": " notebook environment to hand over to the researcher who's performing the", "start": 1676.65, "stop": 1680.39, "id": 359}, {"text": " investigation and not have them worry about the technical overhead or the idea of", "start": 1680.39, "stop": 1685.83, "id": 360}, {"text": " working with large bits of data. We have notebooks that", "start": 1685.83, "stop": 1689.51, "id": 361}, {"text": " do all the important parts.", "start": 1689.51, "stop": 1691.69, "id": 362}, {"text": " So all told, this is how it all sort of breaks down. We have our archive", "start": 1693.17, "stop": 1697.07, "id": 363}, {"text": " in its complete form.", "start": 1697.07, "stop": 1699.33, "id": 364}, {"text": " We took a copy of that into solar work light and we use that as a search", "start": 1699.79, "stop": 1702.95, "id": 365}, {"text": " interface to find trends and other bits of evidence. And then on the other side", "start": 1702.95, "stop": 1708.49, "id": 366}, {"text": " of that or conversely, we have the Arc full text derivatives that we've been", "start": 1708.49, "stop": 1712.67, "id": 367}, {"text": " manipulating, changing and then putting into a Google Colab environment where we", "start": 1712.67, "stop": 1716.89, "id": 368}, {"text": " perform more computational inspired text analysis and other forms of analysis.", "start": 1716.89, "stop": 1723.33, "id": 369}, {"text": " So that's the stage set with the data set. So basically all told, it comes down to these four different", "start": 1757.73, "stop": 1762.87, "id": 376}, {"text": " facets, resilience, education, trust and engagement. So what we're trying", "start": 1762.87, "stop": 1769.81, "id": 377}, {"text": " to do then is take a look at the information that was produced by these different", "start": 1769.81, "stop": 1774.35, "id": 378}, {"text": " organizations during the course of the pandemic to see how well they rank more or", "start": 1774.35, "stop": 1779.27, "id": 379}, {"text": " less along these four different facets.", "start": 1779.27, "stop": 1781.03, "id": 380}, {"text": " And then put more specifically, you know, can we determine how well the", "start": 1784.23, "stop": 1788.11, "id": 381}, {"text": " organizations in the Niagara region performed in these four dimensions", "start": 1788.11, "stop": 1791.07, "id": 382}, {"text": " during the course of the pandemic?", "start": 1791.07, "stop": 1792.93, "id": 383}, {"text": " So how do we actualize this or like what's", "start": 1794.7700000000002, "stop": 1797.73, "id": 384}, {"text": " once one thread that we're investigating?", "start": 1797.73, "stop": 1799.47, "id": 385}, {"text": " So where we're situated is in the southeastern part of Ontario, and we're sort of", "start": 1799.91, "stop": 1805.71, "id": 386}, {"text": " physically geographically bound where a peninsula. So we have this really nice", "start": 1805.71, "stop": 1809.81, "id": 387}, {"text": " rigid structure where everyone kind of knows where the Niagara region begins. And", "start": 1809.81, "stop": 1814.85, "id": 388}, {"text": " we also have this added complexity of another municipal body called the Niagara", "start": 1814.85, "stop": 1819.37, "id": 389}, {"text": " Regional Council, which is an elected body from representatives of all the", "start": 1819.37, "stop": 1824.09, "id": 390}, {"text": " different municipalities. And so there's this push-pull between the", "start": 1824.09, "stop": 1828.09, "id": 391}, {"text": " municipalities, the cities and towns locally, and then the regional council.", "start": 1828.09, "stop": 1831.51, "id": 392}, {"text": " And one of the things we're trying to investigate is the how messages regarding", "start": 1832.35, "stop": 1838.01, "id": 393}, {"text": " COVID were broadcast in the Niagara region. Did it go to the Niagara Region", "start": 1838.01, "stop": 1842.95, "id": 394}, {"text": " Council first and then down to the municipalities? Was there any back and forth?", "start": 1842.95, "stop": 1847.25, "id": 395}, {"text": " The regional council is officially the public health board of the region, but", "start": 1848.85, "stop": 1853.73, "id": 396}, {"text": " that doesn't mean, you know, all municipalities were at lockstep with what the", "start": 1853.73, "stop": 1858.53, "id": 397}, {"text": " regional council was trying to broadcast. Just entering the realm of web", "start": 2175.63, "stop": 2179.55, "id": 468}, {"text": " archiving, I would say that we're accidental archivists in the sense that we've", "start": 2179.55, "stop": 2182.77, "id": 469}, {"text": " been documenting digital culture for probably a decade, but kind of in our own", "start": 2182.77, "stop": 2185.89, "id": 470}, {"text": " ways that are very much lo-fi. And so we had quite the learning curve on this", "start": 2185.89, "stop": 2190.65, "id": 471}, {"text": " project. And we're immensely grateful for the mentorship that we've been given.", "start": 2190.65, "stop": 2193.55, "id": 472}, {"text": " And so I highly recommend for people who may be just entering this world that", "start": 2193.67, "stop": 2197.53, "id": 473}, {"text": " this is an excellent program to be a part of. So I'm going to show you a little", "start": 2197.53, "stop": 2201.03, "id": 474}, {"text": " bit about what we did. And it'll seem a bit entry level, but I think the", "start": 2201.03, "stop": 2203.77, "id": 475}, {"text": " conceptual questions that came out of the research are really important. So we're", "start": 2203.77, "stop": 2207.35, "id": 476}, {"text": " the feminist think tank. I co-lead this. And we're at the University of Waterloo.", "start": 2207.35, "stop": 2212.11, "id": 477}, {"text": " And we explore digital media activist practices online and kind of think those", "start": 2212.11, "stop": 2217.43, "id": 478}, {"text": " through in a way that we want to map them with outstanding media tactics from", "start": 2217.43, "stop": 2223.11, "id": 479}, {"text": " previous eras and generations and wanting to make that dialogue happen. Our goal", "start": 2223.11, "stop": 2227.43, "id": 480}, {"text": " is to always have accessible conversations about feminism and the variety of", "start": 2227.43, "stop": 2231.63, "id": 481}, {"text": " media tactics that it has that has been used over time. And these are kind of", "start": 2231.63, "stop": 2235.71, "id": 482}, {"text": " four goals within the project. And one of those is to develop accessible digital", "start": 2235.71, "stop": 2240.43, "id": 483}, {"text": " research methods based on the principles of data feminism, where we're always", "start": 2240.43, "stop": 2243.77, "id": 484}, {"text": " thinking through the types of power structures that are imbuing all technologies", "start": 2243.77, "stop": 2247.71, "id": 485}, {"text": " and design. And that's where this project that we're doing that I'm talking about", "start": 2247.71, "stop": 2251.69, "id": 486}, {"text": " today comes in. So our work with ARCH this year had a couple of main objectives,", "start": 2251.69, "stop": 2257.57, "id": 487}, {"text": " but I'm going to speak to the second one today. We wanted to, in the project, map", "start": 2257.59, "stop": 2263.25, "id": 488}, {"text": " and analyze the presence of feminist key concepts", "start": 2263.25, "stop": 2265.45, "id": 489}, {"text": " in the archives that we were looking at.", "start": 2265.45, "stop": 2267.05, "id": 490}, {"text": " And the reason why we wanted to do this was because we realized that there was a", "start": 2267.15, "stop": 2270.15, "id": 491}, {"text": " lot of really important key terms that had been used and spoken about since, say,", "start": 2270.15, "stop": 2275.15, "id": 492}, {"text": " the 1960s and 70s, but they meant something very different in a kind of fourth", "start": 2275.21, "stop": 2278.85, "id": 493}, {"text": " wave digital media context. And so we wanted to think about those histories a", "start": 2278.85, "stop": 2282.55, "id": 494}, {"text": " little bit and also consider what has been overlooked or erased within our", "start": 2282.55, "stop": 2286.91, "id": 495}, {"text": " archival spaces around these key terms and who is using them and who gets to use", "start": 2286.91, "stop": 2291.17, "id": 496}, {"text": " them and why. So ultimately, we decided on a particular list of archives and this", "start": 2291.17, "stop": 2297.63, "id": 497}, {"text": " became our final list right here that I'm showing you. These are the ones that we", "start": 2297.63, "stop": 2301.57, "id": 498}, {"text": " will be looking at in this project and I'm only going to speak about one today,", "start": 2301.57, "stop": 2304.59, "id": 499}, {"text": " but these are the entirety of them.", "start": 2304.59, "stop": 2306.15, "id": 500}, {"text": " So to look through these and to determine this particular list, we started by", "start": 2306.83, "stop": 2310.37, "id": 501}, {"text": " just simply going on Archive It and putting in the word feminism and seeing what", "start": 2310.37, "stop": 2313.61, "id": 502}, {"text": " came up. And then we got to these and began to look through them on the ARCH", "start": 2313.61, "stop": 2318.15, "id": 503}, {"text": " platform to look at things like domain capture to see what the top 10 websites", "start": 2318.15, "stop": 2322.29, "id": 504}, {"text": " archived by each collection were. And that's how we determined this particular", "start": 2322.29, "stop": 2325.95, "id": 505}, {"text": " set because we were like, well, this is an interesting kind of set of", "start": 2325.95, "stop": 2329.41, "id": 506}, {"text": " combinations of websites that would be really good to explore further. So from", "start": 2329.41, "stop": 2334.07, "id": 507}, {"text": " there, we moved to text files, which was an easy file for us as entry-level", "start": 2334.07, "stop": 2338.17, "id": 508}, {"text": " technology people to work with. And we started our keyword search in the text", "start": 2338.17, "stop": 2342.89, "id": 509}, {"text": " files. And this seemed really straightforward, but it actually took us a long", "start": 2342.89, "stop": 2345.69, "id": 510}, {"text": " time to determine this. And this is where we learned to do a bit of coding, which", "start": 2345.69, "stop": 2349.53, "id": 511}, {"text": " was really, really empowering and important for us and opened up a lot of new", "start": 2349.53, "stop": 2352.81, "id": 512}, {"text": " research questions. Okay, let me, oh, yeah, there we go. So these were the", "start": 2352.81, "stop": 2357.63, "id": 513}, {"text": " original key terms that we had imagined would be useful in thinking about", "start": 2357.63, "stop": 2362.37, "id": 514}, {"text": " feminist histories. And so this is the set we started with. But once we got to", "start": 2362.37, "stop": 2365.49, "id": 515}, {"text": " know our collections better, we began to expand the set of terms a little bit", "start": 2365.49, "stop": 2371.59, "id": 516}, {"text": " further. And this is the set that we ended up with. And I'm showing you with the", "start": 2371.59, "stop": 2376.47, "id": 517}, {"text": " asterisk because this is how we ended up coding it was with these sort of open", "start": 2376.47, "stop": 2379.29, "id": 518}, {"text": "-ended spaces. And so what we did here is we took these key terms, and then we,", "start": 2379.29, "stop": 2385.19, "id": 519}, {"text": " in each web archive, we did word counts. So a very simple code of word counts in", "start": 2386.17, "stop": 2389.85, "id": 520}, {"text": " the text file. And we wanted to see how many times these words appeared in each", "start": 2389.85, "stop": 2393.09, "id": 521}, {"text": " collection. But then we started to do this kind of two-word intersecting search", "start": 2393.09, "stop": 2397.65, "id": 522}, {"text": " where we'd be like, where do the words labor and resistance come together? How", "start": 2397.65, "stop": 2401.13, "id": 523}, {"text": " many times are both of those words found in each collection? And so we wanted to", "start": 2401.13, "stop": 2405.75, "id": 524}, {"text": " see if there was any insights that could be offered from that. And so today, I'm", "start": 2405.75, "stop": 2410.31, "id": 525}, {"text": " going to just briefly talk a little bit about the one collection, which is the Me", "start": 2410.31, "stop": 2413.79, "id": 526}, {"text": " Too collection from the Schlesinger Harvard Library.", "start": 2413.79, "stop": 2417.45, "id": 527}, {"text": " And this is a really great one because it's showing us a contemporary collection", "start": 2417.93, "stop": 2420.75, "id": 528}, {"text": " that was developed in real time. And it's a fairly", "start": 2420.75, "stop": 2423.59, "id": 529}, {"text": " large collection, so it's really useful.", "start": 2423.59, "stop": 2425.33, "id": 530}, {"text": " In the next two slides, what you'll see, which we find really interesting from", "start": 2425.93, "stop": 2428.95, "id": 531}, {"text": " our research perspective, is these are the key terms out of those top", "start": 2428.95, "stop": 2432.83, "id": 532}, {"text": " 20 terms we saw. These are the top 12.", "start": 2432.83, "stop": 2434.57, "id": 533}, {"text": " And in that top 12, the top three were media, culture, and community. So we were", "start": 2435.27, "stop": 2439.59, "id": 534}, {"text": " pleased with the fact that the work community was in the top three, but we were", "start": 2439.59, "stop": 2442.47, "id": 535}, {"text": " very surprised that media was one and culture was two. If you look at this one", "start": 2442.47, "stop": 2447.07, "id": 536}, {"text": " where we did a graph about the ones that had more than 5,000 hits within the", "start": 2447.07, "stop": 2450.63, "id": 537}, {"text": " collection, the pool shrinks to seven terms with media as the most prevalent and", "start": 2450.63, "stop": 2455.05, "id": 538}, {"text": " culture and community behind it, but you see communities almost reduced by half", "start": 2455.05, "stop": 2458.65, "id": 539}, {"text": " in terms of prevalence. So what's notable, obviously, from our perspective is the", "start": 2458.65, "stop": 2462.53, "id": 540}, {"text": " fact that feminism is nowhere in the top seven list. This suggests to us, we", "start": 2462.53, "stop": 2466.73, "id": 541}, {"text": " suspect, that the collection has captured conversations about hashtag me too,", "start": 2466.73, "stop": 2470.63, "id": 542}, {"text": " which comment more about the hashtag and its virality than what it's actually", "start": 2470.99, "stop": 2474.57, "id": 543}, {"text": " about. And that's a really interesting insight. So to determine if this was true,", "start": 2474.57, "stop": 2478.95, "id": 544}, {"text": " we ran a new set of text analysis on the terms within this collection, and we", "start": 2479.35, "stop": 2482.91, "id": 545}, {"text": " added terms that we thought would be more appropriate to the movement itself. So", "start": 2482.91, "stop": 2486.19, "id": 546}, {"text": " if you see here, we chose seven special words and did a word count on those. And", "start": 2486.19, "stop": 2490.51, "id": 547}, {"text": " if you look at these side by side, you can see that even here, none of the seven", "start": 2490.51, "stop": 2495.79, "id": 548}, {"text": " that we selected to be maybe more appropriate to the collection actually outpaced", "start": 2495.79, "stop": 2499.67, "id": 549}, {"text": " the frequency of our top three terms. And so we think that this is a really,", "start": 2499.67, "stop": 2503.15, "id": 550}, {"text": " really interesting insight. And this is seen even more clearly here when you", "start": 2503.15, "stop": 2507.85, "id": 551}, {"text": " combine those top terms from the original list with the more specific list. And", "start": 2507.85, "stop": 2513.59, "id": 552}, {"text": " so what we think that this does prove is that this collection and the fact that", "start": 2513.59, "stop": 2519.29, "id": 553}, {"text": " we think it probably represents a pretty good snapshot of the internets, how the", "start": 2519.29, "stop": 2524.15, "id": 554}, {"text": " internet archived Me Too movement, is that it does indeed explore the digital", "start": 2524.15, "stop": 2527.75, "id": 555}, {"text": " hashtag as a phenomena, as a media, as a medium, than it does the gender-based", "start": 2527.75, "stop": 2531.69, "id": 556}, {"text": " violence that the hashtag refers to. And the same point comes across in this word", "start": 2531.69, "stop": 2538.39, "id": 557}, {"text": " cloud. And so what I'm showing you too here is someone who is learning data", "start": 2538.39, "stop": 2541.71, "id": 558}, {"text": " visualization on the fly and that I'm doing these kind of small scale beginner", "start": 2541.71, "stop": 2545.51, "id": 559}, {"text": " interventions, but even in those we can pull a lot of kind of analytic data. And that is really what", "start": 2778.29, "stop": 2784.75, "id": 613}, {"text": " we're trying to focus on these disruptions since online commenting really got", "start": 2784.75, "stop": 2790.47, "id": 614}, {"text": " popularized in the early blogosphere, where it was seen as a novel mode of", "start": 2790.47, "stop": 2795.91, "id": 615}, {"text": " participation and democratizing online publishing. So it wasn't only a news", "start": 2795.91, "stop": 2802.35, "id": 616}, {"text": " article or a blog post itself that had any value, but also the users and", "start": 2802.35, "stop": 2807.25, "id": 617}, {"text": " interactors with that text that could react on it.", "start": 2807.25, "stop": 2810.45, "id": 618}, {"text": " And with the rise of web 2.0 and social media, we've seen that commenting is", "start": 2811.37, "stop": 2818.15, "id": 619}, {"text": " increasingly becoming problematized. So it's no longer just", "start": 2818.15, "stop": 2823.75, "id": 620}, {"text": " unwanted comments that are spam or even trolls, but comments are actually seen as", "start": 2823.75, "stop": 2829.87, "id": 621}, {"text": " toxic and taking away something from the main text.", "start": 2829.87, "stop": 2833.29, "id": 622}, {"text": " And with this problem, we see a rise in a commercial moderation industry, where", "start": 2834.53, "stop": 2840.91, "id": 623}, {"text": " the providers of commenting technology also offer ways to", "start": 2840.91, "stop": 2847.07, "id": 624}, {"text": " send the tide of these unwanted comments by allowing unwanted comments to be", "start": 2847.07, "stop": 2852.93, "id": 625}, {"text": " filtered out and wanted comments to be highlighted.", "start": 2852.93, "stop": 2856.35, "id": 626}, {"text": " So these disruptions are what we want to follow in our web archives. But there are also cases where the comments are only", "start": 2892.81, "stop": 2897.75, "id": 633}, {"text": " explicitly loaded when clicked on or explicitly searched, something they", "start": 2897.75, "stop": 2904.73, "id": 634}, {"text": " are on a completely separate page. And this really is one of those", "start": 2904.73, "stop": 2909.13, "id": 635}, {"text": " disruptions that we're trying to track.", "start": 2909.13, "stop": 2911.27, "id": 636}, {"text": " In general, we see the comments across the web are not very well preserved. And", "start": 2913.21, "stop": 2919.65, "id": 637}, {"text": " that's mostly due to the way that they're implemented using JavaScript. They're", "start": 2919.65, "stop": 2925.41, "id": 638}, {"text": " not part of the main text itself, the HTML, but they're loaded in separately", "start": 2925.41, "stop": 2931.87, "id": 639}, {"text": " via JavaScript calls. And even depending on how websites are called, these", "start": 2931.87, "stop": 2938.39, "id": 640}, {"text": " comments can be saved. But when you're trying to play back the web page in the", "start": 2938.39, "stop": 2944.93, "id": 641}, {"text": " internet archive way back machine, or even in silver way back, it is this", "start": 2944.93, "stop": 2949.83, "id": 642}, {"text": " JavaScript that is overwriting comments that are actually preserved. So we're suggesting the presence like show comments,", "start": 3009.37, "stop": 3014.23, "id": 654}, {"text": " reply. But these can have language specific interpretations. Also websites", "start": 3014.75, "stop": 3021.75, "id": 655}, {"text": " use different, some use reply, some use react. And we want to separate", "start": 3021.75, "stop": 3028.47, "id": 656}, {"text": " these out from the main text. So that's an additional challenge when trying to", "start": 3028.47, "stop": 3033.05, "id": 657}, {"text": " locate these commenting systems. Now we have three indicators for Discus.", "start": 3033.05, "stop": 3039.95, "id": 658}, {"text": " Here I'm showing for our world news dataset, which is a list of top 50 most", "start": 3040.19, "stop": 3046.23, "id": 659}, {"text": " popular world news outlets that we have just a tiny fraction of to get kind of an", "start": 3046.23, "stop": 3052.15, "id": 660}, {"text": " interpretation of what commenting systems are used. And we see indicators of", "start": 3052.15, "stop": 3058.11, "id": 661}, {"text": " Discus being used there, partly by the embed code. Discus also has unique", "start": 3058.11, "stop": 3064.85, "id": 662}, {"text": " identifiers for each of its commenting threads, but also the commenting threads", "start": 3064.85, "stop": 3069.77, "id": 663}, {"text": " themselves. We look for the HTML code and find that in our dataset. And on some", "start": 3069.77, "stop": 3075.75, "id": 664}, {"text": " pages, there is overlap between these indicators. And we can see Discus", "start": 3075.75, "stop": 3082.49, "id": 665}, {"text": " actually becoming popular and slowly losing its popularity in our dataset with", "start": 3082.49, "stop": 3089.13, "id": 666}, {"text": " its peak in around our expected 2015. All right, what happened there? Some women wrote on Twitter, we will never, we are", "start": 3694.37, "stop": 3700.31, "id": 772}, {"text": " braved, the lockdown, the new mental workload, homeschooling care, the case of", "start": 3700.31, "stop": 3706.93, "id": 773}, {"text": " nurse, and so on. Of course, it's very difficult to find a woman in these", "start": 3706.93, "stop": 3712.65, "id": 774}, {"text": " archives for several reasons. Multilingualism first, but also many noises and", "start": 3712.65, "stop": 3719.61, "id": 775}, {"text": " polysemic words that may appear in our search. However, we are", "start": 3719.61, "stop": 3726.15, "id": 776}, {"text": " optimistic, we made some tests related to nurse, but in French, because in", "start": 3726.15, "stop": 3730.57, "id": 777}, {"text": " French, it's not the same word for a female or male nurse. Our goals here of the project are to understand the", "start": 3894.41, "stop": 3901.17, "id": 810}, {"text": " narratives and linking patterns of HIV misinformation in geocities and to do", "start": 3901.17, "stop": 3906.63, "id": 811}, {"text": " something similar in COVID-19 surrounding these COVID-19 dashboards, because", "start": 3906.63, "stop": 3911.35, "id": 812}, {"text": " these COVID-19 dashboards are this way that we've communicated the status of", "start": 3911.35, "stop": 3916.13, "id": 813}, {"text": " COVID over time throughout the pandemic.", "start": 3916.13, "stop": 3918.99, "id": 814}, {"text": " And we're also looking at these COVID-19 dashboards and", "start": 3919.53, "stop": 3922.39, "id": 815}, {"text": " what's their connectedness to Twitter.", "start": 3922.39, "stop": 3924.11, "id": 816}, {"text": " So we look at geocities as a way to communicate in the early, late 90s, mid late", "start": 3924.11, "stop": 3930.93, "id": 817}, {"text": " 90s. And then we look at Twitter. And then we're also interested in what", "start": 3930.93, "stop": 3935.03, "id": 818}, {"text": " information can we actually extract from these dashboards, because many of these", "start": 3935.03, "stop": 3938.25, "id": 819}, {"text": " are broken, as you'll see in a moment. So the methods that we're using, we're", "start": 3938.25, "stop": 3943.17, "id": 820}, {"text": " using qualitative narrative analysis, reading a lot of qualitative work to", "start": 3943.17, "stop": 3946.43, "id": 821}, {"text": " understand. So we're reading content, trying to understand the themes. And I'm", "start": 3946.43, "stop": 3949.47, "id": 822}, {"text": " going to talk about some of those results today. We're using text analysis. So in", "start": 3949.47, "stop": 3953.35, "id": 823}, {"text": " addition to like text frequency, topic analysis, so how do we understand this", "start": 3953.35, "stop": 3957.83, "id": 824}, {"text": " really large corpus of information? We're talking tens of thousands of geocities", "start": 3957.83, "stop": 3962.31, "id": 825}, {"text": " pages that mention HIV. How do we find the relevant pages that mention HIV, which", "start": 3962.31, "stop": 3967.35, "id": 826}, {"text": " was surprisingly more difficult than we thought. I mean, data cleaning is always", "start": 3967.35, "stop": 3971.09, "id": 827}, {"text": " difficult, but we were pretty shocked at how difficult it was to figure out", "start": 3971.09, "stop": 3974.51, "id": 828}, {"text": " what's related to HIV, what wasn't related to HIV. And then we're also using", "start": 3974.51, "stop": 3978.67, "id": 829}, {"text": " social network analysis as a way to look at some of these linking patterns. And", "start": 3978.67, "stop": 3983.09, "id": 830}, {"text": " we're using a lot of computational resources. So we're using the ARCH tools from", "start": 3983.09, "stop": 3986.37, "id": 831}, {"text": " the archives and Leash folks, which are very powerful. And we're also using local", "start": 3986.37, "stop": 3989.91, "id": 832}, {"text": " computing resources that the university provides via our research computing", "start": 3989.91, "stop": 3993.65, "id": 833}, {"text": " group. Now, why would we want to compare HIV and COVID? I think one important", "start": 3993.65, "stop": 3999.29, "id": 834}, {"text": " concept is that both of these were novel viruses at the time, and we didn't know", "start": 3999.29, "stop": 4004.41, "id": 835}, {"text": " a lot about these viruses. So information was emergent, information was changing.", "start": 4004.41, "stop": 4007.95, "id": 836}, {"text": " And so there was an attempt, even though the science was ongoing, right, we do", "start": 4008.41, "stop": 4012.09, "id": 837}, {"text": " have different politics that are at play in HIV versus in COVID. But we do see", "start": 4012.09, "stop": 4016.67, "id": 838}, {"text": " that initially, we didn't really understand a lot about HIV. We didn't understand", "start": 4016.67, "stop": 4020.71, "id": 839}, {"text": " how it was transmitted, we didn't understand what communities were affected, we", "start": 4020.71, "stop": 4023.49, "id": 840}, {"text": " didn't understand treatment. And you can see a similar analog with respect to", "start": 4023.49, "stop": 4026.75, "id": 841}, {"text": " COVID-19. It was a similar novel virus that we needed to understand. So as people", "start": 4026.75, "stop": 4031.53, "id": 842}, {"text": " fill in gaps, misinformation and disinformation become tools to fill in some of", "start": 4031.53, "stop": 4037.27, "id": 843}, {"text": " those gaps, as well as tools to cause trouble, so to speak. So that's when we're", "start": 4037.27, "stop": 4042.33, "id": 844}, {"text": " comparing these two. And these two times are helpful. So how is this changed in", "start": 4042.33, "stop": 4046.61, "id": 845}, {"text": " the information environment as the information environment has changed? We can", "start": 4046.61, "stop": 4050.55, "id": 846}, {"text": " see posting on Geocities is quite different than COVID-19 dashboards and Twitter.", "start": 4050.55, "stop": 4055.57, "id": 847}, {"text": " And then if we look at Geocities, we see Geocities as an early community, right,", "start": 4056.61, "stop": 4059.93, "id": 848}, {"text": " this move from Usenet to Geocities, where people could self-publish. I mean, it", "start": 4059.97, "stop": 4064.69, "id": 849}, {"text": " was very difficult to self-publish by comparison, versus these COVID-19", "start": 4064.69, "stop": 4068.65, "id": 850}, {"text": " dashboards are published by many official sources. So at least in the United", "start": 4068.65, "stop": 4071.93, "id": 851}, {"text": " States, every single one of the states in the United States has a COVID", "start": 4071.93, "stop": 4075.63, "id": 852}, {"text": " dashboard, as well as national dashboards, we have international dashboards. So", "start": 4075.63, "stop": 4079.51, "id": 853}, {"text": " these dashboards were kind of the way that we put our finger on what COVID was", "start": 4079.51, "stop": 4082.69, "id": 854}, {"text": " doing. But we can see kind of Geocities plus Twitter and COVID dashboards kind of", "start": 4082.69, "stop": 4088.63, "id": 855}, {"text": " give this idea of how folks were talking about this. So what resources are we", "start": 4088.63, "stop": 4094.11, "id": 856}, {"text": " using to do this? The first we're using is the Geocities archive from the", "start": 4094.11, "stop": 4099.51, "id": 857}, {"text": " Internet Archive. And so we're using this to search for mentions of HIV, AIDS and", "start": 4099.51, "stop": 4104.45, "id": 858}, {"text": " other keywords to understand what's circulating, how HIV and AIDS were projected.", "start": 4104.45, "stop": 4110.21, "id": 859}, {"text": " And you can see here's an example where Allo is used, considered treatment,", "start": 4111.25, "stop": 4115.21, "id": 860}, {"text": " potentially for HIV. We're also using the IPC COVID-19 archive, which Valerie", "start": 4115.55, "stop": 4121.71, "id": 861}, {"text": " already introduced. So I won't go deep into that. But we're using this to look at", "start": 4121.71, "stop": 4126.65, "id": 862}, {"text": " these COVID-19 dashboards.", "start": 4126.65, "stop": 4128.25, "id": 863}, {"text": " And we can see this is an example of the Arizona COVID-19 dashboard right here.", "start": 4128.63, "stop": 4133.45, "id": 864}, {"text": " And you can see this is loading it through the Internet Archive. And you can see", "start": 4133.83, "stop": 4137.45, "id": 865}, {"text": " that this gives us an error page, right? And this is fairly common because many", "start": 4137.45, "stop": 4141.35, "id": 866}, {"text": " of these dashboards are quite complex. They're developed in Tableau or other", "start": 4141.35, "stop": 4146.49, "id": 867}, {"text": " dashboard services that are resistant is probably an understatement to archiving.", "start": 4146.49, "stop": 4150.35, "id": 868}, {"text": " So we have pieces of them. We have JavaScript that's embedded in the pages that", "start": 4150.79, "stop": 4154.53, "id": 869}, {"text": " sometimes contains data. So just because the pages won't load, that doesn't mean", "start": 4154.53, "stop": 4157.87, "id": 870}, {"text": " there isn't any sort of data behind that. So", "start": 4157.87, "stop": 4159.59, "id": 871}, {"text": " we're interested in how do we extract that data?", "start": 4159.59, "stop": 4161.13, "id": 872}, {"text": " So you see in this example, this is an error page that you", "start": 4161.53, "stop": 4165.11, "id": 873}, {"text": " receive when you look at the dashboards.", "start": 4165.11, "stop": 4166.65, "id": 874}, {"text": " We see this is fairly common. Other ones, other dashboards might load with", "start": 4167.27, "stop": 4170.79, "id": 875}, {"text": " different temporal data. So and say, you know, it says December 11th, but it", "start": 4170.79, "stop": 4175.41, "id": 876}, {"text": " actually loads data from two weeks before and two weeks after. So it's this kind", "start": 4175.41, "stop": 4179.35, "id": 877}, {"text": " of mishmash of a dashboard that actually doesn't represent that one day. You can", "start": 4179.35, "stop": 4184.63, "id": 878}, {"text": " see this is what the live dashboard looks like on the Arizona Department of", "start": 4184.63, "stop": 4188.65, "id": 879}, {"text": " Health website. So you can see that error message. What's supposed to be there is", "start": 4188.65, "stop": 4191.93, "id": 880}, {"text": " actually a map of the counties in the state of Arizona, as", "start": 4191.93, "stop": 4194.87, "id": 881}, {"text": " well as the number of cases and such.", "start": 4194.87, "stop": 4196.51, "id": 882}, {"text": " So you can see the differences between that. So briefly, I just want to give you", "start": 4196.99, "stop": 4200.41, "id": 883}, {"text": " some results that we found. And this is going to mainly come from our narrative", "start": 4200.41, "stop": 4204.13, "id": 884}, {"text": " analysis, mostly of COVID, sorry, mostly of geocities and HIV. But I'm going to", "start": 4204.13, "stop": 4209.81, "id": 885}, {"text": " talk about how that contrasts a little bit with with COVID-19. So we found these", "start": 4209.81, "stop": 4216.39, "id": 886}, {"text": " really four categories of misinformation in these geocidic pages", "start": 4216.39, "stop": 4223.29, "id": 887}, {"text": " about HIV. So we find this idea of supportive like information for treating HIV", "start": 4223.29, "stop": 4227.59, "id": 888}, {"text": " symptoms, infections. And this is incorrect information. And we also have to", "start": 4227.59, "stop": 4232.47, "id": 889}, {"text": " understand we have to contextualize this at the time. So what did we know in the", "start": 4232.47, "stop": 4237.03, "id": 890}, {"text": " late 90s to early 2000s versus what do we know now? So what might have been", "start": 4237.03, "stop": 4241.25, "id": 891}, {"text": " accurate information at that moment in time in the late 90s or early 2000s might", "start": 4241.25, "stop": 4245.69, "id": 892}, {"text": " actually be inaccurate information now, but it wasn't misinformation back then.", "start": 4245.69, "stop": 4250.09, "id": 893}, {"text": " But so we're trying to contextualize that we also see preventative information", "start": 4250.51, "stop": 4253.45, "id": 894}, {"text": " offering methods of HIV prevention, we see debunking people are working to debunk", "start": 4253.45, "stop": 4258.53, "id": 895}, {"text": " and say, this is misinformation. These are misconceptions, this is incorrect. And", "start": 4258.53, "stop": 4263.07, "id": 896}, {"text": " then we see this other third category that's basically homophobic and hate filled", "start": 4263.07, "stop": 4266.99, "id": 897}, {"text": " content. So these four categories actually kind of hold. And we see that we", "start": 4266.99, "stop": 4273.85, "id": 898}, {"text": " see these supportive debunking and preventative categories as really these", "start": 4273.85, "stop": 4276.81, "id": 899}, {"text": " attempts to fill information voids, we're missing scientific information, so", "start": 4276.81, "stop": 4280.29, "id": 900}, {"text": " someone has to fill it. We also don't see the government conspiracy theories that", "start": 4280.29, "stop": 4284.97, "id": 901}, {"text": " we see now. We right now we see this heavily politicized in our COVID data,", "start": 4284.97, "stop": 4289.09, "id": 902}, {"text": " right, we see this heavily politicized like anti government, like lack of trust", "start": 4289.29, "stop": 4292.81, "id": 903}, {"text": " in government, we don't see that in the geocities data, but of course, that also", "start": 4292.81, "stop": 4297.41, "id": 904}, {"text": " these are all these archives are incomplete. So we might be missing some of that", "start": 4297.41, "stop": 4300.29, "id": 905}, {"text": " information. But we see this kind of contrast that COVID takes those four", "start": 4300.29, "stop": 4303.99, "id": 906}, {"text": " categories and then adds this conspiracy theory category. And the hate, of", "start": 4303.99, "stop": 4308.21, "id": 907}, {"text": " course, in COVID is not homophobic, the hate is like vaccinations, other kinds of", "start": 4308.21, "stop": 4312.03, "id": 908}, {"text": " things. And then finally, we really see all this misinformation, not as attempts", "start": 4312.03, "stop": 4317.45, "id": 909}, {"text": " to harm people, but we see the vast majority of this as this idea of community", "start": 4317.45, "stop": 4321.49, "id": 910}, {"text": " sense making. So how do we make sense of the current pandemic, whether it's HIV,", "start": 4321.49, "stop": 4326.67, "id": 911}, {"text": " whether it's COVID, how do we provide support information. And so these are our", "start": 4326.89, "stop": 4331.97, "id": 912}, {"text": " preliminary results at this moment in time. Moving forward, we're looking at", "start": 4331.97, "stop": 4335.41, "id": 913}, {"text": " those dashboards, we're looking at linking patterns, and other things.
